About the Show
On display at Once Over Coffee is a small portion of a larger collection of remnants of an almost surely fictional West Texas town. The pieces are hand-painted and are comprised of generally found or recycled objects. The work is meant to suggest a fantastic community that has a secret. Different languages, Italian spacemen, slimey letters in a French cafe ... what does it mean? The fun is in letting the mind wander.
Why do this? An impossible town in the middle of nowhere has, interestingly, been a welcome escape and seems to resonate with people I've been talking to about the work. Celade Texas is as real as any other place I've never been to.
I was sad when it was discovered that Bigfoot wasn't real. I needed Bigfoot ... this wild, untamed version of us running around in the woods, free and uncapturable. Aliens and UFO's are like that too.. there's got to be something bigger going on, right? Celade is like this for me ... an exit. A portal. A place where we can get the hell off this crazy planet from time to time.
In this show, I collaborated with the talented Leslie Jones who was able to put together a Celade-inspired terrarium. I've already heard some great collaboration ideas from people who have been inspired to contribute. If you have an idea, or just want to reach out Please do, we'd love to hear from you. We've got another show in the works for October and March.
